TD interview '77 - classic Synapse magazine
EM News Poster: BruecknerAmbient - Date: Wed Feb 19, 2020 6:06 pm
Quite recently, American sythesist an (former?) music journalist Doug Lynner created a page on Facebook, dedicated to Synapse, an (apparently) classic magazine on electronic music from the 70s.

He's sharing stories about the magazine there, but also shares scans of the original issues, which are hosted on this homepage:

Both the discussions and shared memories on the FB group as well as the old articles and interviews are usually very interesting and entertaining (provided one takes interest in the topic).

Just today, for example, Doug shared an interview with Tangerine Dream, and told this story about how it came about:

"To introduce this Tangerine Dream Interview, let me tell you an editor's tale:
The adage that everyone is a critic is certainly true. No one likes to be criticized but we all do it.

The Synapse offices were set far back from the street so we seldom received unanticipated knocks on our door. But one day we did and when I opened it a very severe looking man with long hair stood there and announced immediately, "I am Chris Franke from Tangerine Dream. I want know why you don't like our music!"

At that moment, as I invited Chris in, I was just glad that that I hadn't written the review he was referring to personally.
We had a cordial talk and decided that the best thing for everyone would be to conduct an interview with the group. This is the result.

Conducted in Hollywood at the time of their concert at the Santa Monica Civic Center, we were very happy to have them in our pages and introduce them more fully to their growing audience in the US."

Here's the direct link to the interview:

syndae - episode 510
EM News Poster: treibklang - Date: Fri Feb 14, 2020 8:00 pm
I'm not sure, why I tend to choose rather melodic music recently for this podcast. Maybe it is the mood I am in, so that I need a little contrast to my work, which is rather chaotic at the moment. Which is about to change soon, to become a different kind of chaotic (Ha!). Or maybe it's the season, where it stays rather dark most time of the day. Or maybe it is the political situation, which kind of drives one crazy seeing so much incompetence and selfishness of people being in charge all over the world. Or maybe because it's Valentines today? Not really. But whatever the reason, the music that currently finds its way into the shows is simply wonderful to listen to. And wonders are most welcome, especially in form of tracks like provided by Marc Enfroy (Surrounded), Hollan Holmes (Milestones), Stan Dart (Loneliness EP), Tuuligan (Sininen), Darshan Ambient (A Day Like Any Other), and Andy Pickford (Aphelion).

Wonders in vibrations on

Yours, Stefan

Suzanne Ciani / Manuel Göttsching, May 4th, Cologne
Concert News Poster: BruecknerAmbient - Date: Fri Feb 07, 2020 8:23 pm
Manuel Göttsching just posted an announcement / invitation to a very interesting event on FB, a double concert sharing stage with Suzanne Ciani in Cologne on the 4th of May 2020.

I'm inclined to attend, however it's a bit tricky on a Monday. Hope it will work out...

Here's the (quick DeepL) translation of the official (German) announcement:

"E2-E4" is undoubtedly one of the most important chess moves in music history. The title refers to a short movement of the king's pawn, a standard opening actually, which gave Berlin's Manuel Göttsching surprisingly new musical scope. The piece for guitar, synthesizer and drum computer, a single track, dates from 1981, at that time still pressed on two sides of a vinyl LP and since then varied, quoted, copied and remixed countless times.
The self-similar repetition, a universal structural principle in both animate and inanimate nature, finds its aesthetic counterpart here. Soft, engaging grooves combine classical minimalism à la Steve Reich and Philip Glass with techno and ambient. Göttsching, co-founder of the German Krautrock scene in the early 1970s around Guru Guru, Tangerine Dream and his own trio Ash Ra Tempel, was already a well-known figure at the time. But it wasn't until "E2-E4" that the British Guardian appointed him the "godfather" of electronic music.

The first part of the concert evening will be played by the American Suzanne Ciani - Diva of the Diode. The five times Grammy nominated pioneer for electronic music can look back on sixteen solo albums and the Keyboard Magazine award "New Age Keyboardist of the Year".

New Releases by DEEP IMAGINATION announced for 2020
EM News Poster: Deep Imagination - Date: Sun Feb 02, 2020 12:07 pm
The German electronic project DEEP IMAGINATION has announced the release of a new album for the second half of the year 2020.

Currently, mastermind Thorsten Sudler-Mainz is working on new material, which stylistically continues the path of the last release "Temple In Nowhere" with elements from Ethnotronica. For more than 20 years the interaction of mystical and atmospheric electronic sounds and real played instruments is a trademark of Thorsten Sudler-Mainz's productions.

In the run-up to the album release, a new single with video clip will also be released on BSC Music/Prudence/Zebralution, as always.

Well-known guests like Ann Kareen Mainz (vocals) and GĂŒnter Kaufmann (guitars) and and new guest musicians, like a lead singer, have been invited by DEEP IMAGINATION to the band's "Imagination Studio". And with his old friend and guitarist Achim von Raesfeld there will be a musician with whom Thorsten Sudler-Mainz had already founded one of his first bands in the mid 80s.

Hyperkube - Remnants
New releases Poster: TomCoppens - Date: Sat Feb 01, 2020 4:20 pm

A live recording from a concert at postX.
As my Kubusschnitt bandmates constantly remind me I tend to go for eighties TD, I will happily describe this as melodic sequencing.
All proceeds from this album will be used to organise further EM-events in Belgium.
The physical CD will be released at the forthcoming AntennA festival, together with new releases from Onsturicheit and Rhea on the new littl'antenna records label.

Available on bandcamp right now, streaming on other digital services to follow in the next days
