Robin Banks & Steve Smith - Stealing time - GR-235
New releases Poster: Ron - Date: Sun May 07, 2017 11:48 am
In a strange way this collaboration came about through illness.

Robin Banks is a classically trained pianist who composed music for TV, Radio and Production Music libraries, and was a keyboard player with a number of bands, one of which included multi-instrumentalist Steve Smith.

Over time he became disillusioned with the music 'business', and when he developed an ear condition known as Ménière's Disease (causing partial hearing loss, vertigo and tinnitus) he decided his music career was over.

Steve Smith is well known in EM circles as one half of successful duo 'Volt' and one third of the trio 'Tylas Cyndrome'

Before starting on this project Steve was suffering from a deep depression, but felt that working on a new project might help, and managed to coax former bandmate, and now friend, Robin Banks into the studio to experiment with co-writing a few tracks. Despite their various ailments they found themselves creating something energetic, melodic, positive and upbeat, which eventually developed into a roller-coaster ride through many styles from Rock to Pop to Classical to EM. One characteristic of their music was the frequent use of strange and rapidly changing time signatures, and so they decided to work all this into an album very loosely based around concepts of Time, Time Travel and related matters - 'Stealing Time'

STEVE SMITH:

This collaboration has taught me a lot about making music with multiple time-signatures and how to deal with them in the recording process. It has certainly been the most challenging but also most rewarding musical project I have ever been involved in and has helped me through a state of deep depression.

ROBIN BANKS:

Working with Steve on this project has helped me to re-discover my love of music and I am now busy writing again after a break of several years. I expect to complete another album project within the next few months. Collaborating with Steve has been fantastically enjoyable from start to finish an... (Read More)

Rudy Adrian - Sequencer Rarities - GR-237
New releases Poster: Ron - Date: Sun May 07, 2017 11:45 am
Sequencer Rarities is a compilation of pieces which were created around the same time I released six albums with Groove Records (2000 - 2007). The tracks here were never included on any of my Groove albums, and in fact the majority have never been previously released.

1. Sisters
Written in 1998, this is an out-take from my album Twilight and was created as a companion track to Summa Cum Laude. This track is dedicated to my good friend Barbara Stone and her sister Alison.

2. Solar Flares
Written in 2003, the year after my album Concerts in the USA, this is a semi-live studio recording and uses many of the techniques I employed for my USA concerts. It was originally written for my good friend Mike Valent.

3. Kinetic Flow
Written in 2000, this piece uses the same techniques as used in Kinetic Flow and was released on a CD-R which accompanied Mick Garlick's Sequences magazine.

4. Blue Waves
A live studio improvisation from around 2005.

5. Wind In The Trees
A semi-live recording from 2007, this was another track originally created for my good friend Mike Valent.

6. Summers at Ruby Bay
One of the first sequencer tracks I ever created. It was written at my father's house in Ruby Bay, New Zealand, during a very productive two-week summer holiday at the end of 1995. During that same time, I created many of the tracks that would end up on my first pressed-CD albums Twilight and The Healing Lake.

All the music on this album was recorded direct to stereo digital tape from a Yamaha SY77 synthesizer (plus on some tracks a Kurzweil K2000R sampler), driven via MIDI by a 1-megabyte Apple MacIntosh running Mark Of the Unicorn Performer 2.31+ software. External processing included a Lexicon MPX100 reverb and two Zoom 508 digital delays. Final mastering was done on ProTools at The Video Factory.

I am forever grateful to (in chronological order): Barbara Stone, Gerard Hueting, Dave Law, Bert Strolenberg, Fritz Couwenberg, Kees Aerts, Ron Boots, Eric Snelder... (Read More)

syndae - episode 386
EM News Poster: treibklang - Date: Fri May 05, 2017 8:00 pm
So this is the week of breaking headphones. First, my listening headphone started to crackle, it's an open Beyerdynamics DT990 which I have for about 15 years. And I thought, well, cannot blame them for slowly giving up. I always have a second one. Well, I had. As right this week my closed-back AKG, which I use for mixing and recording, simply broke on one side. Blimey! So now I am using a portable on-ear headphone for listening and recording. Wonder, what that will do to the show. But, hey, you are here for the music, and I totally have cool stuff for you on the playlist. Brand new releases as well as some that definitely are worth checking out. Fantastic tracks, too, one this new edition, which are by Pyramaxx (Move), Blinky Blinky Computerband (Fractured Sign), Wellenfeld (Ten), Baltes & Erbe (Electric Garden), aAirial (Music for Sunny Days), and Saafi Brothers (The Quality of Being One: Remixes).

Played for fun at:

New album by Ryuichi Sakamoto
New releases Poster: BruecknerAmbient - Date: Wed Apr 26, 2017 12:55 pm
Aparrently it's possible to pre-listen / stream Sakamoto's new album "Async" via this link prior to it's actual release on Friday.

https://thump.vice.com/en_us/article/ryuichi-sakamoto-async-album-stream

I couldn't make use of the opportunity though - due to my outdated browser which doesn't appear to support that page.

Thought maybe one of you is interested and more lucky than me... Wink

By the way: Sakamoto seems to have overcome the cancer that he was reported suffering from a while ago, which, if true, is good news!
