Pertti Grönholm: Occasional Tunes (Vols. 1-4)
New releases Poster: PERGRO - Date: Wed Apr 11, 2018 7:30 pm
Dear EM friends around the globe,

Please let me introduce my Occasional Tunes project which is dedicated to vintage Casio keyboards of the early 1980s. The main idea was to limit myself to the sounds and functions of the Casiotones of the years 1981–1983. Therefore the instruments used in this four volume compilation include only Casiotones MT-45, MT-65, PT-30 and the Casio VL-Tone.

I played all the music with these keyboards only; no loopers, samplers or outboard sequencers were used. However, I coloured the sound by using analogue and digital effect units of which many date back to the 1980s. A digital multitrack recorder was used to capture individual tracks which were then edited in software environment before the final digital mixing and analogue mastering.

The pieces were recorded during 2015–2017 but some of the melodies and other musical ideas have haunted me for years. I didn’t want to limit myself with the musical styles and genres. In a musical sense, I found it liberating to start playing with Casio rhythms and sounds, letting the instruments lead me to structures, scales and chords.

Not surprisingly, many of the final tracks reminded me of the music I used to listen in the early 1980s. It was a combination of new wave and synth pop, movie soundtracks, ambient, industrial and experimental music, Berlin school electronic music and krautrock of the 1970s, and even funk, reggae and disco of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Hope you enjoy my Occasional Tunes.

All the best,
PG-66

Hello fellow synth-heads! Mr. Green

Good things come to those who wait...

Michel Geiss, former long-time artistic collaborator to Jean-Michel Jarre, pre-released the first track from his upcoming debut album. It's named "Avatar".

To promote Michel's new track as well as the upcoming album I have also reactivated the Matrisequencer-website.

['ramp] -- no sleep 'til wilmersdorf: the berlin years
EM News Poster: dronescape - Date: Tue Apr 03, 2018 5:59 pm
Hi all,

thanks to the overwhelmingly positive resonance synchronize or die received, I could raise the funds for the next album in the pipeline, no sleep 'til wilmersdorf. Thank you very much to all of you who have supported me through their generosity and enabled me to pick up where I had left in 2012.

wilmersdorf will be the 11th album in ['ramp]'s history, and as you may have guessed already (telling from the title), this time it's going even further back (and faster) than with SOD:

In 1978/79 I spent some time in Berlin with my parents, living in the borough of Wilmersdorf, not too far away from all those historical sites as Thomas Kessler's Beat Studio, Michael Hoenig's place, Edgar Froese's home, Peter Baumann's Paragon Studio, or David Bowie's and Iggy Pop's flat in Schöneberg. To me, it was an amazing experience, witnessing the city divided by The Wall (not Roger's) -- in fact, I still draw from these memories when spending time in Berlin, and I confess I quite miss the oppressive and bleak atmosphere this place used to have:

https://doombientmusic.bandcamp.com/track/no-sleep-til-wilmersdorf-album-teaser

The album will be released officially on 2nd May 2018 in order to celebrate the 35th anniversary of my very first musical lesson. It will be limited to 222 hand-numbered copies, and it will come with a 12-page booklet. I am taking pre-orders now (if you don't need to have the FLAC download) through stephen at parsick dot com -- be quick if you want to make sure you're first in line.

Thanks for your time,

Stephen

The Long Light - Hiraaeth
EM News Poster: the glimmer room - Date: Sun Apr 01, 2018 1:59 pm
Hiraeth is the second ambient album I have recorded under The Long Light name, though to be honest it is very almost a Glimmer Room album. This one moves a bit faster and has a few more layers than its predecessor Our Waking Hours, but still has enough space and the slow pace to still be considered a true ambient work.
Hiraeth is an old welsh saying that has no direct translation into English, but basically means ‘a longing for a home you can never return to, a home which may never had existed at all’. I only became aware of this saying halfway through the recording but for me at least it conjured up the same atmosphere I was hearing in the music, it felt right and was adopted as the works title.
This release is especially poignant for me as at this time in my life I am facing a very similar situation, a very long story. So I sincerely hope this recording finds a resonance with the listener.
It is also sadly impossible  for me to supply the CD/R versions of any of my albums for a short while, so they will just show up as sold out till I get myself truly back on track with life.

The stream/download is available at my Bandcamp page https://theglimmerroom.bandcamp.com/

Many thanks,
Andy

TaboTago at Zwingli-Kirche, Berlin
Concert News Poster: bewoest - Date: Sat Mar 31, 2018 8:30 pm
Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at 8 PM – 11 PM
KulturRaum Zwingli-Kirche e.V.
Am Rudolfplatz, 10245 Friedrichshain

TaboTago will also present their new album “Kymatica”.

Image

Kymatica is a journey back in time with one foot firmly in the future. To Berlin-based trio TaboTago, the years between Tangerine Dream‘s monolithic album »Zeit« in 1972 and the controversial fusion experiment »Cyclone« towards the end of the decade still provide plenty of inspiration. Over the course of many sessions and private concerts in a basement on Taborstraße they manage to crack the code which allowed Tangerine Dream to build epic and complex sound worlds using synthesizers and early electronic equipment. Starting out as a tribute band, it wasn‘t long before the band applyied their secret knowledge to the six pieces of original material on debut album »Kymatica«.

In the spirit of the originals from the 70s and performed on current digital gear as well as on analoge synthesizers, these up to 11-minute long tracks occasionally sound like undiscovered Froese recordings. Partly, this impression can be attributed to the fact that, similar to the techniques used by most krautrock bands at the time, all of the tracks were edited from live studio
sessions, using no overdubs and very little post production. The band regarded it vital to replicate the deep and warm sound of Tangerine Dream‘s 70s productions.

By incorporating these diverse influences into a ›Berlin School‹ production, »Kymatica« organically beams Tangerine Dream‘s spirit into the 21st century. – Tobias Fischer
