Music is emotion. The theme for 2017 for me is pure feeling, to be completely blown away by an album, being impressed by the music, goose bumps, tears (not only of joy) and respect for what all these musicians did this year. There were very good other albums, but they did not hit me as hard as these ten did:

1 Hologram Earth - Black Cell Program
2 Dodecahedron - Kwintessens
3 [‘ramp] - Synchronize Or Die
4 Myrkur- Mareridt
5 Hallatar - No Songs Upon The Bridge
6 Roger Waters - Is This The Life We Really Want
7 Free System Projekt - Five Suns
8 Steven Wilson - To The Bone
9 Igorrr - Savage Sinusoid
10 ARC- Fleet

Well, that is an 'interesting' collection. I am intrigued how classical Berlin School EM features in this list of Death Metal releases but, ho hum, who am I to criticise when it comes to musical taste?!

I was particularly struck by https://igorrr.bandcamp.com/track/ieud - Monty Python does metal.

My favourite this year: https://perge.bandcamp.com/album/catharsis, but no surprise there!

All I can say is that I have a very eclectic musical taste and metal and EM happen to be my two favorite genres Very Happy

Tangerine Dream - Quantum Gate
Quaeschning & Schnauss - Synthwaves
Bridge to Imla - The Radiant Sea

I have mainly been buying more FAX albums this year, playing catch up with Pete Namlook's wonderful legacy. The above three are the stand outs that immediately come to mind. I will have to go and check what other new stuff I purchased.

Here's my others ;

Northaunt - Nightpaths
Randall Collier Ford - Remnants
John Serrie - The Sentinel
Steve Roach - The Passing
Mick Chillage - Exulansis
Between Interval - Legacy

So ambient and FAX rules it appears Razz

As every year, I have only perceived a rather narrow range of releases, and thus can’t say if these are the „best“ of 2017 - here’s a list of albums I particularily enjoyed, though - which is no big surprise, as they all are by one or the other of my old champions (no particular order):

Hollan Holmes, Prayer To The Energy

Mike Oldfield, Return to Ommadawn

Cosmic Ground, Live

Ian Boddy & Markus Reuter, Memento

['ramp], synchronize or die

Phobos, Approaching Dark Space

Robert Rich & Markus Reuter, Lift a Feather to the Flood

Robert Rich, Live at the Gatherings 2015

Mannheimer Schlagwerk featuring Markus Reuter, Sun Trance (World-Premiere Performance)

Shane Morris & Mystified, Emergence

Mathias Grassow, Ascending Rosespirals

„Honorary Mentions“ Wink

Not my absolute favorites this year - but still very enjoyable (for different reasons) and yes: this one time the TD album is superior to KS…

Klaus Schulze, Eternal - The 70th Birthday Edition

Tangerine Dream, Quantum Gate

Syn, Fauni Genus

I’m sure as the days go by, much more great albums will pop up in my memory which escape me at the moment…
