Now there is a 'unique' title....

IIRC Terje stopped off on his way to an Awakenings gig to record with FSP a while back, so is this the fruit of their labours?

This release Spoon Forest, like Galaxis, is also a special one, but in a
different way. This time we invited Terje Winther (what is not very much
known is that Terje is also a classical music composer and director). We
already had some e-mail contact before, and he told us that he would be
going to the UK to do a gig at Awakenings in 2012. Marcel and I invited him
to come to my studio for a session the week before his concert. Musically it
turned out very well, but unfortunately it seemed my studio didn't want to
cooperate, with all kinds of weird and mysterious things happening. Luckily
Terje was able to handle the recordings and he did a really stunning job
editing, mixing and mastering it all. So that's the story behind it. BTW, FSP
will have a stall at E-Day.

Unfortunately there are some problems with the Free System Projekt webshop. We're unsure if we can correct it quickly. As an alternative we try to sell Spoon Forest through Bandcamp, soon.
So please bear with us.

Hi Ruud

Any news on Spoon Forest?

I see it's on your Bandcamp page,
but no option to purchase as yet...

Hi Graham

there were some issues on the shipping part, but I contacted Bandcamp and they have fixed the issue. Everything should work now.
The whole Bandcamp thing is still new for us, but eventually all music will be available from Bandcamp.

I've got a lot of time for Bandcamp,
so I think you're both making a wise decision going that route with future sales of your music.

I only discovered Terje's music a few months ago,
and love his sound...
Free System Projekt I've been listening to for well over a decade,
so Spoon Forest promises to be an absolute gem... Wink

Order duly placed. Very Happy

For me,
FSP are one of a select few groups where samples aren't necessary
in terms of my decision to buy, as to date I can't think of a bad album they've released.

That said, I also noticed the download/streaming option is not available
as is the norm on Bandcamp once you've purchased the physical copy. Confused

That's a shame as I usually like to stream my Bandcamp collection
to listen to when I'm not at home...

I agree, however if you just start out on bandcamp there are restrictions on what you can put up. Mostly in terms of song length and file size. Once you have sold enough you get the posibility to put everything up.

I think just a sample of a few minutes doesn't really do FSP's music any justice but if they indeed have restrictions still, the samples might be good.

Over 90% of the artists I see on Bandcamp and whose albums I buy put up one or two full tracks as teaser until release date and on release day have the full album available for listen and purchase.

I noticed in 'our' corner of Bandcamp many artists seem not to do that, perhaps out of fear of losing sales. (or perhaps their songs are a bit too long Wink )

Streaming an album does not seem to interfere with sales, as a matter of fact the trend is that people will actually buy an album much easier if they can listen to it (either on Bandcamp of Spotify or Youtube). Of course there will be a few people who rip it off the site but those people are not going to buy the album anyway. I think the profit of having potential new listerners/fans because everyone can listen to it will outweigh the few missed sales due to musical thiefs.

I think it's automatic that when you buy a CD you get a download straight away. That's how it is on our pages, and I don't remember having to set it up this way.

The pre-order for Spoon Forest is now available on Bandcamp.
It's the CD + Download/Stream and Download Only option, incl some track samples.
On the 31th of March it will all be available.

https://freesystemprojekt.bandcamp.com

For the ones who already ordered the CD only option, the CD+Download option will be available for you as well. I'll send it to you as a gift, that should work it out.

Certainly interested in ordering this, but: $18+ for the CD, and nearly $11 shipping to the US? After fees, we're talking $30 for a single CD order...

I fully understand how postal rates have made things very near impossible for most indie (particularly EM) arists/labels/musicians, but this kind of price structure can make ordering such items prohibitive for many people. Even as a diehard CD enthusiast & longtime buyer/collector myself, and with the truly *enormous* amount of choices & music out there, I often have to make qualitative decisions based on cost differentials as my money is by no means infinite.

Respectfully, Marcel, you might want to reconsider the costs for customers living way over on the other side of the pond; I know that 'profit margins' are pretty low yield for CDs anyway (it costs about $15 USD to ship a single CD from here in the US internationally!) but to build/maintain audiences & keep your work active on the disc format mandates that such 'margins' might to be modulated somewhat. Unfortunately, the grim reality of our current CD/distribution/record-buying climate (and this comes from someone who spends a *large* amount of money on CDs, supporting as many folks directly as is possible) is that it becomes necessary to minimize 'profit' simply to keep the work regular, alive, vital, and flowing (at least on the CD format).

Just an informed, friendly opinion. Smile

I can relate to your pain on this ubikman Sad

Postage costs have soared in recent years,
and I've literally had to change the way I now purchase CDs.

I used to enjoy regularly buying directly from artists such as Steve Roach & Robert Rich,
However as I live in the UK, postage costs have made this virtually prohibitive.

Projekt Records over where you are in the USA is a great website and label,
but I just can't afford to order from them anymore due to fees & postage.

Also as I live in the UK,
anything ordered outwith the EU is subject to import VAT and Royal Mail surcharges (unless it slips under the radar Wink ).

An example...
If I order a CD from Projekt at $14, the costs are as follows...
Cost of CD = $14.00
Postage to the UK = $12.00
Import tax = $4.55
Royal Mail surcharge = $11.00
Total cost of CD = $41.55

That's almost 3 times the actual cost of the CD Shocked

I always prefer the physical product over a download,
and where possible I always prefer to buy this direct from the artist,
but for me, ordering from artists outwith the EU is just not financially viable anymore... Sad

Anyway, I digress and have gone off topic...

I really wish there was a solution to this,
as the EM community, small as it is, is clearly a global community,
and there are still those of us out there (perhaps of a certain age Wink )
who prefer the actual CD and artwork over a file on their hard drive...

I hope you manage to work something out as I'm sure Spoon Forest is going to be gem of an album Wink

Seriously, take advantage of the interweb: download and burn it to a wax cylinder, but don't miss out on this great album for the sake of not getting it on CD.

Have to agree on this, but in the other direction, ie US to UK.

Between exorbitant postage rates, poor exchange rate ( although slightly improved recently ) adding vat/taxes, and now I notice PayPal are adding a currency exchange charge. Utterly ridiculous. Basically means I am no longer ordering CDs from Prokekt / Steve Roach / Robert Rich or anywhere else in the US. Still get hit with these charges for downloads on bandcamp etc but slightly less painful.

This is also increasingly applying to items priced in Euros where all these charges are also added. Even from Eire just across the water for goodness sake.

This does not really auger well for CD sales unless you are buying in your home country. Bad news for us all, musicians, labels, and EMheads.

Yep, I noticed that myself with Paypal.
Their exchange rate leaves much to be desired... Confused

It's a real shame as there are talented independent musicians out there making brilliant music at the moment,
and people (like us) who love listening to, buying, and supporting their music,
and yet we're both being hammered by government taxes and big business... Rolling Eyes

I'm not sure what the answer is,
that said Spoon Forest was ordered a few weeks ago,
so I can't wait to hear it when it arrives... Wink

If the samples are anything to go by,
this could be a contender for my own album of the year,
and there's been a few superb releases in 2018 already.... Very Happy

I'd mention Emmens/Heij - Galaxis, but that's in another thread... Wink

As been said by others already, the postage costs are ridiculous these days (and have been for some time) and then there's vat/taxes, Bandcamp and Paypal, they want to get their cut too which I can understand, but it all adds up to the price.
We want the listener to have a choice between physical (+download) and download only (with the bonus of not having that postage costs).
First batch of CDs will ship out tomorrow.
Hope you enjoy the music and more music and extra's will be available in the near future!

I know sending from Germany is quite cheaper then from The Netherlands, the prices are getting really absurd over here.

Samples sound very good indeed.

However 12 Euro for a download ? Add in the VAT and currency exchange charge and this is about £13 Sterling. For a download.

Always said my limit for a download is 10 Euro, $10 or about 8quid max. Seems increasingly this limit is being challenged and I am put off buying in most cases.

I may cave in on this however, will see. Any one advise of the album run time, thanks.

Edit. I see it’s 69.59 mins, so almost a double album in old money Wink mmmhh .

The only option for people who want a CD is to burn your own from the download and print out the artwork & put it into a jewel case. Not ideal, but I've done it for those few downloads I've purchased.

Is there an option for people to pool their purchases? This is a community, after all. If 10 people in Europe bought 10CDs from the U.S., all sent in one package, would the price per unit be cheaper? Just a thought.

And don't get me started on Brexit and how that will change import charges to the U.K... Sad

Glad to see the CD arrived. although personally I find 4 weeks delivery time is a bit long. But we can't help it, orders are sent mostly between 1 and 3 days.

There is a new FSP CD out called Procyon, released by Groove. Ok, it's not really new, but it's the first time it's released as a factory pressed CD, instead of download and CD-R. It's not possible to order it directly from us or Bandcamp.

BTW, the order page on the FSP website is closed down. From now on CD's and downloads go via Bandcamp. In a while all other FSP titles will be sold through Bandcamp (and the usual dealers).
