Depends on the era Jon...

If we're talking the 70's,
then for me it's Schulze by a mile.

Some of those live and unreleased tracks from the 70's
found on the Ultimate Edition just sound fantastic... Wink

I'm not too fond of either's overall output in the 80's or 90's if I'm honest
(with a several exceptions of course)

From the millennium onward,
probably Tangerine Dream...

That said, and IMHO, neither's later work was a patch on what they released in the golden era...

Then again, I'm a Berlin School nut,
so I'm bound to say that... Laughing

I like both. Together with Tomita, Conrad Schnitzler and Rick Wakeman they are my all-time top 5 artists / bands.

It’s quite dificult to choose if You are an electronic music fan. They are quite different. Schulze remained mainly electronic oriented and TD “Unfortunately” proved themselves on different genres.

Yet, because i am an electronic purist, i must say Schulze!

Tangerine Dream for me. But T.D. were both the best, before 1987, and the worst, after 1987. Klaus was much more consistent.

On a more serious note, Schulze had a stronger liberating effect on me whereas the effect Tangerine Dream have had on me is more of a more long-lasting nature (albeit only between 1972 and 1984).

Luckily one does not have to choose Smile. But basically i think TD's music is clearly the product of three guys creativity and KS is badically one man's vision. In my opinion TD was maginficient in 1972-1977 and increasingly less so later on, Schulze's peak was a couple of years later, about 1974-1981. all in all, Schulze has been much more consistent, for better or worse, but TD was probably a bit more daring and flamboyant in their prime... For pure quality/quantity ratio, Schulze wins over all, but TD was probably more exciting in their best times. But as I said, i am glad I do not have to choose and can have both Smile

Both have had very interesting things in their careers which inspired me. What I always have liked more on Schulze is his sense of humor.

I prefer KS music more. Especially his golden 1976 to 1979 years, Trancefer and Audentity. His music got some special touch that makes then emotionally work well with my mind. I can't tell exactly name what is causing this. And no KS alike musician got this right. I kind of feel if it is KS or someone else pretending to play like KS.

TD, on the other hand, has more variety in structure and style. But I am only listening to their 1976 - 1982 regularly.

But all in all, I am always listening to something that matches my moods. So this is emotionally and not judging the composition, playing or recording skills. KS is for sure NOT a gifted keyboard player. But he touches some of his listeners (and others never like him). it is a bit like Philip Glass lates 70ies - early 80ies music: You either love it (I do) or not. Nothing in between for most people I know.
