Recently I've been playing around with the cellular automata mutation function of the wonderful app Xynthesizr. I was inspired to look at this again after hearing of the passing of the mathematician John Conway who developed the rules for this cellular automata.
First was a simple piece I quickly put together with three instances of Xynthesizr on three devices. On the iPhone and in the custom bound area of the larger iPad I have regions that morph based on the rules of Conway's Game of Life and I populated them with "gliders"; constructs in LIFE that will continuously traverse the infinite plane on diagonal paths....
Diving in further I made another piece where I set up a "Copperhead" and three "Lightweight spaceship" gliders on a simple custom scale (I, IV, V) so the dense note clusters can work in a more musical context. Because these move orthogonally, I could use them as an ostinato.
Complementing this with the wonderful Fugue Machine, a very "playable" sequencer.
