Fri Jun 12, 2015 4:36 pm Free EP by Robert Rich for Moog Music on SoundCloud |
  |
A friend over at FB just shared the good news that Robert Rich has recorded an EP of three tracks for Moog Music, entitled "Hiding In Daylight" which is available as a free download form Moog's Soundcloud page at the moment.
As far as I've understood correctly, the music was created using the Minimoog Voyager rack (the production of which seems to be discontinued from now on - why they mark that "event" with a special little release I have no idea, but the music is cool anyway...)
Here's a link to the corresponding article at the Moog website:
http://www.moogmusic.com/news/minimoog-voyager-rme-discontinued
And this is the direct link to the Soundcloud page - I've downloaded the tracks already and I'm listening at this moment. Nice stuff (and maybe a little different from what we're used to from Robert...).

It's rather sub-standard for Robert, especially when you know "Bestiary". This here sounds more like a random collection of sounds (not complex enough to be really interesting IMO).
I blame it on the tool and its limitations, not on the performer.

I agree.
Anyway, thanks for the advice, Michael.

It's certainly different, and yes: also less complex (...or, maybe: more minimalistic) than his usual work - in fact it's quite different from all that I know by him so far (...I don't know "Bestiary" yet, though - if that's similar and therefore a point of reference).
Actuall, I think it's quite cool in an edgy, dark, metallic way.

I can, if at all, apply that only to the first track. I think the other two are far more cohesive and musical.

For sure it would have sounded more like his trademark sound if he had added a few complex pads above and below, a little bit of modular chirping and some flute playing (...then actually in the last track I even seem to hear some flute).
And also for sure the typical sound of the Voyager determined the result to some degree.
I, for one, think it's a nice interesting little giveaway...

Speaking of MOOG, earlier this week the Chairman (his name escapes me at this moment) called a meeting of the entire company.
He announces he has sold the company!
He then says he has sold the company to ALL of the employees!

Indeed, and good news, I think...
