Now that “The Album” will see the light of day by end of the next month it would be nice to start another discussion which will be in line with other topics here on EMPortal. Recently Hurry Hurry started a discussion about labels that are not willing to accept their music and not so long ago one of our fellow members approached me for a very nice and attractive project.

Almost 3 years ago we started a thread entitled ‘Joint Efforts’. For some reason this title became special to me as it reflects exactly what we are doing here: working together. A nice and almost symbolic example will be The Album performed by “Joint Efforts”; 20 tracks in a row will become the physical evidence that people from all over the world are capable to do something together without really knowing eachother. The funny thing is that during the 3 year’s existance of this forum I have had the privilige to meet more and more people personally during concerts and festivals I visited whom until then I only used to know as virtual existing ‘speaking Avatars’. Believe it or not but the people behind the ‘avatars’ I have met so far matched the positive expectations I already had. This week I received a PM from one of them confirming this which strengthened the opinion that the connection in this community might be stronger than I always had thought.

From the start of the Album project I had in mind that if it would finally be possible to release this CD and if it would be able to ‘break even’ it would be a shame not to continue it. After some investigations I recently discovered a website which is actually based on a nice concept I was looking for: “It starts with fans first and then the artists create from there” Basically all we need is a dedicated group of people who are willing to ‘invest’ in the purchase of their ‘artist’s CD to make a physical release possible. The reason that I use the word physical is that I still believe in the wish and demand for the ‘classical’ CD or even better LP. The advantage is that you contribute nothing more than the amount you would spend to buy a CD and you assist the artist in keeping his/her hands free for full creativity.

As the potential of the “crowd” here is stronger than I initially thought I think it is a viable idea to gather a solid group of people here who might be interested to give it a go. Having studied the statistics of EMPortal from the start in 2007 I can tell you that the number of visits has been very positive (especially the last 12 months when the number of visits doubled) but more important there is a very active group here that visits the Portal on a daily basis, contributes in the discussions and are willing to assist us when we need help. If we could focus on this group you can simply conclude that the potential number of people who might be interested is large enough to make this concept work: appr. 100 people to invest money in a future CD of one of the fellow member artists. If there are more than enough people to support this idea we could even proof that it is possible to release a pressed CD below the psychological ‘limit’ of 10 Euro Wink

I would be happy if it would be possible to gather people here who share the same opinion and who would like to participate in “Joint Efforts”

You mean something like the 'sellaband concept' Koos? An artist wants to release an album, potential buyers raise a fund by ordering one or more albums, and as the goal is reached the album gets released? (Simply said.)

I think this is an interesting concept. The same Marillion has done with their last albums.

I know Koos now for about 5 years and see him as a person you can really trust. So this idea is in capable hands and I am willing to help out where ever I can.

Thanks for your postive words and your offer to assist Rene!

I am sure there is enough potential here to start the ball rolling and I would be more than happy to work it out but need enough support to give it a start Smile

I'm in.
An initial limited edition run, once sold other other options may be considered if the demand is still there?

I totally agree Dan

We don't need huge numbers, we only need a basis to start the ball rolling. No obligations, just a bit of commitment will do Smile

Thanks for your support Bert and yes; 3 years is far too long to make a good decision Wink

Well i think this is a great idea and i would be very happy to be involved i think joint efforts should definetly continue after the release of "the album".

I would like to offer another idea we should do "an album 2" maybe just a single album this time (i would be very happy to do a track) but all the names of those interested are put into a hat and paired up to do tracks together so for a 10 track album 20 people are involved.
After the album costs are recovered the excess is kept aside to fund an album by some newcommer to be selected by a thinktank of the admins? who i trust to come up with some selection proccess.
That way there is no favoritism among the people who already release music and somebody new gets a go.
All the above just idea's im happy whatever is decided.
