Buyer Beware!

On his Bandcamp page the artist Fryderyk Jona is offering several of his albums as "name your price" Digital Albums.

What you get, however, are just samples! Not the full albums!

Assuming that when an artist offers a paid (even though it's "name your price") download option, (s)he offers the full album. Not just a bunch of 1-minute samples.

I contacted the artist and asked for a refund. But thought it wouldn't hurt to warn here for this scam too.

Will update if and when I receive a reply.

He states for ex for the Warm Sequencing album that the digital download is only for demos and that is available only as physical cd.
But i totally understand You. Sometimes it is confusing what the artist is offering. BC for me is firstly a download site, so it's very strange when someone is selling only cds (at these postal rates), cds without downloads or samples for money. But after the previously named Space Art album misery i am not being surprised by anything 😡

Personally, I can't quite warm up to those "name your price" downloads -- okay, I also have them in my catalogue but some people obviously don't understand that a donation of 50 Cents (for 90 minutes of music) won't end up in the pockets of the artist but only in the pockets of Bandcamp and Paypal. Rather spare yourself the money and the artist the humiliation, I'd say.

As for Mr. Jona, well... can't comment on this as I can't quite figure out the idea behind his NYP download.

Just thought I'd point this out.

Like I wrote, I would post an update if and when u received a reply from the artist.

To start with, and to be completely open on this topic, Mr. Jona obviously didn't like the fact that I paid only 2 euro per album. That is his good right of course. But especially in this case I was quite happy that I didn't pay more. Given the fact that I only received a few snippets of his music.

The good thing is that I'll get a refund. Not for the money. But for the principle.

As for the confusion about the availability of downloads: there are quite a few artists and labels on BC that offer physical releases only. The huge difference with this case is that these artists and labels do NOT offer a download option. Simply because there is no album to download! If you have an option to buy a download, and even give the customer the option to pay for that download, it should be more than just samples of the music. BC doesn't force you to make a download buying option available to your customers.

Anyway, case closed.

As far as I remember, Fryderyk had pointed it out in the info texts that the download(s) only contains samples. He had this "CD only" philosophy from start and for as long as he posted about it in social networks, he never made a secret out of it.

And maybe You don't realise that, but he basically disappeared from the scene and stopped releasing music in 2016, that's six years by now. Unless he's using some artist / project name since that I don't know about, but I met him two years ago for the last time (he lives - or lived - in a neighbouring village), and he told me that he had not recorded any music or touched his synths for a long time then...

Of course, it might have been wiser to just switch them to "free" on BC.
On the other hand, I guess he saw it as an opportunity for fans to support him without necessarily having to purchase a CD.

Like the "buy me a coffee" button on some blogs etc.

He was still rather new to the scene and to releasing music, and perhaps more naive or unexperienced than greedy.

But much more so - at least in my book - he was one hell of an EM artist, very, very gifted...

Call me stupid, but in my book it's complete and utter nonsense to offer samples of music for sale on a BC page. It leaves the impression that you sell, well, the full album. Otherwise people can listen to samples on the BC page (streaming).

IIRC he previously didn't have the "buy" option for downloads. Besides, he does offer one of his albums as a download for 13 euro. So I thought he'd changed his mind. Perhaps you'll only get the snippets for this 13 euro too. You never know.

Hell, yeah! Not just wiser, but more ethical too.

As for being "one hell of an EM artist", Bert thinks otherwise.

I'll leave it at this. No refund yet. But if he thinks he deserves my 4 euro, fine. Hope he'll can get a coffee for that.

I never intended to do that. :)
Actually I find Your frustration understandable...

From the way BC is designed, actually not - if a track (even if it's just a sample) is streamable, it also is - or has to be - automatically available in some way. Unless, perhaps, you have the "pro" version (I don't, so I can't tell...).

Interesting. Which one...? I didn't notice yet.

Well, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion.

"...synth-fiddling á la Schulze with some improvised synth-saxophone..."

That's a fairly correct description in a way (except, of course, that it's real saxophone - Fryderyk has studied clarinet and saxophone, plays these instruments as a professional in orchestras and is also a teacher...).

Obviously, as a Schulze fan, I enjoy this type of music much more than Bert...

For this purpose, I'd rather turn to Soundcloud or similar platforms.

At Starbucks, this won't even get you the topping, let alone the extra flavour.
