Demo of the Yamaha S30

I wanted to explore the limits of my Yamaha S30, so I decided to compose, arrange and record a whole tune only by MIDI sequencing the S30.

(featured video)

The song was programmed/performed using Cubase SL solely as a MIDI sequencer controlling the S30 (in "Performance" mode). The song was then recorded straight to 2-track tape in one go. No overdubs, multitracking or external effects were used. Only mild EQ and limiting was used for the digital master. The video was later compiled showing how the various parts were played or programmed.

I was quite surprised with how great sounding the S30 can be![/target]

A very different approach, particularly in the context of the emportal that predominantly has a pretty different focus. I appreciate the straightness of the idea.

You mean, like it is a bit to dance-music like? I love this tune because it gets the blood pumping in a good while still maintaining true to the em spirit. If you check out Kebu's other videos you will find out that he knows his classics.

No. What I meant is that Kebu tries to use all given features in one particular piece of gear. In addition to that, the gear he's chosen for this showcase is actually considered as a kind of more unspectacular gadget, I guess - at least compared to all those retro- and analogue stuff. He even tries to explore the possibilities of MIDI, and how this might expand certain features of the soundmodule and so on.

This is in my opinion much on the contrary to the common practice in the EM scene that just assumes that having a big bunch of synthesizers also means to able to make interesting music. This always seemed to be a bit questionable to me, I have to say.

I mean, I haven't said anything about the music he was playing in the video. I am just impressed by his straight professional technical approach. It would be interesting to get to know if Kebu would be able to find a similar set up that enables the musician to play freely and improvisional over such a complex backing, but still only utilising the S30 though... (I figured something out in that vein for the Korg MicroX, btw, which I think is very useful in terms of reliability, latency and transportability)

Ruud's got a S30 as well and he uses it a lot on our recordings.
It's quite an interesting machine even though it may not look like it's all bells and whistles (and knobs) but I am impressed by the machine.
Though of course we need to have all the modulars and exotic things to impress and do our boring berlin school thing...sigh...
