I am a fan of their stuff up until about 1996. It was never ever cool to like these, even when they were a kind of acid house collective from the ONLY LOVE CAN BREAK YOUR HEART and NOTHING CAN STOP US. Weird considering how big the retro sixties vibe was in the 1990s particularly- something like Madonna's BEAUTIFUL STRANGER is pure ST ETIENNE.

The last ST ETIENNE track I really loved was HE'S ON THE PHONE, the 1995 reworking of the 1984 song WEEKEND A ROME. Less a ST ETIENNE song and more a remix mash-up for then Euro DJ Motiv8. Doesn't hurt how gorgeous Sarah Cracknell is in the video either...

ST ETIENNE only really had one name producer in their run during the 1990s, and that was Alan Tarney on the irresistable YOU'RE IN A BAD WAY. That song is like the B52s by way of John Barry/Laurie Johnson.

The even less successful DUBSTAR also had a ST ETIENNE quality, to the point where Motiv8 did their remix of STARS.

Anyone dare to admit they like or own any of this synthpop?

My wifes a big fan. There last two albums were really quite good too. I liked them as well because they were different from many other bands.

I agree that the Motiv8 mix of He's On The Phone is very good. I have the EP. Also, the 1994 album Tiger Bay is quite nice, produced by the band.

I even saw them live at a music festival here in my hometown in 2000 - don't remember much from the show though.
