Perhaps we would still have patch cables, but these would carry 24-bit data and control commands.
Each module would "know" which others it was connected to (in and out) and act accordingly.
While the modules would basically be the same "root" modules ( Oscillator, Filter, etc)
they would be flexible so that they could change "character" depending on what you asked them to be.
That way you would only need about 4 or 5 basic "machines" that can appear in the system to be many different actual modules.
