Hello there...

Hi all,

While I have been a member of this list for a while, I have been dormant and have just now started to try to post more frequently. I also realized that I have not introduced myself here, so here goes!

Craig Shipley, 51, married with three kids, living in Norcross, Georgia, a suburb NE of Atlanta. I am a pre-sales sales engineer for the 4th largest software company in the world (whoop-de-doo!) who is fortunate enough to work from home (which is why I can post alot here) and have been involved in various aspects of computing and electronics since 1975, mostly as a tech. No real musical talent, although I have played hand percussion and tuned wine glasses at my church (where I am also a neophyte sound engineer) and I have a couple of older synths and an electronic drum kit to whack on when I get frustrated. I tell everyone that the only way I can carry a tune is on my iPod...

I have been an electronic music fan ever since snagging a copy of Dick Hymans' first Moog LP from the PX in Ankara, Turkey back in the early '70's when my dad was stationed there. Anything with a synth in it caught my attention back then, so I developed a taste for prog-rock & jazz-fusion (which still remains today). Like many others, my first real e-music exposure was Tangerine Dream's PHAEDRA, which I first heard on the late, lamented WGTB out of Washington DC at about 2AM one Sunday morning (they used to play some great e-music and prog-rock; one time they brought a Minimoog into the studio and just jammed for about a half-hour! Ahh, the days when radio didn't suck...). Followed up with JMJ, Synergy, Kraftwerk and the like. Deviated off into punk rock in the mid-'70's and it wasn't until TD's WHITE EAGLE that I got back into e-music and there I have remained. I was very passionate about TD for the longest time, but that passion began to cool with ROCKOON and now I'd much rather check out what the newer talents are releasing and by "newer talent" I mean many of you that are on this list. I've also enjoyed going back and picking up on some of those classic or unobtainable releases of my youth.

My current "top 10" most played e-musicians are (in no particular order): Binar, R.M.I., Nemesis, VoLt, The Omega Syndicate, Emmens + Heij, FSP, Redshift/ARC, Zombi & whoever strikes my fancy today (how's that for a cop-out? If you are a musician, it's probably YOU! :D )

Other interests are historic aviation (mostly military, although I have not been in the military and with my horribly bad eyesight until three months ago there was no way I could fly), old cars/trucks/tractors and anything that gets me near a large body of water for recreational purposes.

OK, that's enough noise about me. I'm glad to be here and I appreciate that we have this forum available to us. Looking forward to being able to add my two cents to the discussions, both past and future.

Craig, i know what you mean about TD, a bloody drag they are so commercialized now. However i feel some of their stuff , very little of it has some quality. I enjoy Berlin School alot, but feel the industry is flooded with more and more of these bands and its burning this sound out bigtime. I have found my favorite EM these days is off the Ultimae label from France, very EM orientated nothing of the sound to Berlin School, you should check it out.

Reintroducing myself as I've been away from this site for a long while, but now that I have pretty much terminated my FB activities, I still have a need to get my em-music intel so I expect to be more active here than in the past. Good to see so many long-time contributors still active. All of the above is mostly still accurate but I'm not in IT any longer, at least for now, selling electrical supplies at my local Home Depot. There were times when I was in IT that i wished that I could be selling hammers at HD, so while the "hammers" are Cutler-Hammer circuit breakers, one really needs to be careful what you ask for! ;-)

Hi Craig,

Welcome back to emportal.

Whenever I get emails from Bandcamp that mention recent purchases you have made, I always have to check them out. You've exposed me to several artists that I probably never would have known about.

Thank you for the welcome and the good words about BC; I always like to give a good shout-out to our musician friends and help spread the word. I'm glad to be back with musical like-minded folks.
