How to annoy your fans (and violate GDPR) in 3..2..1

So the other day I got an e-mail from a well-known UK EM-artist informing me about his new album and the fact that he got a new e-mail address. I bought from this artist on Bandcamp before and "followed" him (on Bandcamp!) to get updates.

This time however the e-mail didn't come from Bandcamp, but from his personal address. Something for which I never gave permission. Besides, the mail contained a hardly readable image of over 2MB. No text at all. So far so good you could say, apart from the fact that I never gave permission to mail me outside of the Bandcamp context. But to make things worse this mail had the e-mail address of 342(!!!) recipients in cc. All in the open. There goes your privacy!

The artist in question b.t.w. sent some e-mails in the past complaining how his rights got abused because somebody posted his music on Youtube. And that he would take legal action against this... Blimey! That's a good idea! So I filed a complaint at Bandcamp about this violation of GDPR.

I also mailed the artist to complain. And got no reply so far...

Of course I no longer follow this artist and won't buy his music anymore. Thanks, but no thanks.

Who is the artist?

Doesn't matter. And at least 340 people know it already. ;-)

What bothers me even more than that very ugly mistake he made, is the fact that I (and the other people on the list) haven't received any form of an apology from him. As for damage control that's the least you can and should do in situations like this.

Had a similar experience 3 years ago (pre-GDPR, but still there were privacy rules and regulations back then) with a Dutch artist who was up and coming...

I mentioned it to him; not being a very nice way to treat e-mail addresses that were given confidentially. He also never bothered to apologize or respond at all.

Never bought anything from him since!

Final update.

I recieved a nice and professional mail from Bancamp support informing me that they would contact the artist to "remind them of [their] privacy policy."

Shortly thereafter I received a very unprofessional - quite rude - email with all kinds of nonsense (even worse than his regular album notes). Basically telling me to f*ck off.

So that's it. No more music from this artist for me. And that's fine. There's already more music being released than I can listen to.

Well, I saw a post by a British musician on FB today referring obviously to this situation, so at least he offered some explanations there. For a moment I contemplated the possibility of suggesting to him to make sure to at least apologizing to everyone concerned, however it was my lunch break, times was short, the weather hot and it was none of my business anyway, so I didn't…

Still, I think it was more of an accident (apparently not even performed by himself but some person who "supports" him…) and he was unaware of it until now - and upset about people being upset etc.

A very unfortune thing to happen to anyone; I confess that I also had contemplated the possibility of direct marketing to people who bought some of my music in the past, and at least this incident made me aware of how careful one must be in such a case…

Fortunately, I'm not curious. ;-)
Ok.... I am. But anyway, this should not have happened!

By the way, oh the irony. I clicked the "Smilies" Button and a small window opened saying just "Hacking attempt!"
(would like to put a smily here, but well...)
