His daughter is also great. Is not the tipycal "my father is an artist so I am also". She makes very interesting music, very original.

Absolutely! There is not a lot to compare her music to. There are influences, but they are too many and too subliminal to speak of real pointers towards other people's music.

You mean you have Twelve Moons?

I have it too (on a DAT tape - does anyone remember those?). Very good stuff, great band (a lot of famous friends, like Eberhard Weber), and the usual high-end recording quality that we know from ECM records...

His recordings with the Hilliard Ensemble are close to perfection, even if they are as far from EM as they can be. Very soothing and comforting music, almost angelic. Great music to be sad to, because it lifts you up...

I have quite a few albums by Jan Garbarek (and other recordings that he has appeared on).

I fear that his music bears more and more of a resemblance these days though to another famous soprano sax player with the same second initial.....

I love his daughter's (Anja) solo album Smiling and Waving.

You compare him with Kenny G??

I highly disagree...

Neh...he must be talking about John Goltrane

But seriously: do you really think his music has degenerated to the level of that housewife-pleasing, blow-dried-hairdo, soft-focus-album-cover, selling-more-albums-than-is-good-for-humanity, 80's-conceptual-jazz-for-snobs-wonderboy Kenny G? (did I mention that I really don't like his music?) Nothing personal. He might be a really nice guy, but his music was nothing more than a well conceived "product" from one of those large record companies afaIc.

OK, perhaps I was a just a little harsh in making that comparison :P

I just found that some of the stuff on Visible World was beginning to head into "easy listening" territory and perhaps something else involving the letters "n" and "a" that I perhaps had better not mention :D
Having said that, I do enjoy a lot of that album. I haven't listened to anything since though, as I feared he might be moving further into that area that wasn't quite to my taste. So, what are his recent albums like??

Rites from 1999 is a double-album with really varied stuff on it. The title-track is amazing, an electronic music masterpiece which is used in the film THE INSIDER. Disc 1 is really very good, disc 2 is more varied but includes great tracks like Pan and Evenly They Danced, featuring Bugge Wesseltoft.

In Search Of Dreams from 2004 is probably a little less electronic than his previous works with Jan Garbarek Group. The track As Seen From Above is great.

Thanks for that - I must try to have a listen (I did like pretty much all of the music used on The Insider soundtrack).
