Jean Luc Ponty was a member of The Mothers of Invention with Frank Zappa in ealy 70, around 73 beginning 74. He left the band in a non very friendly way. That is actually the best I know about his playing, I have some bootleg recordings from those tours and is really fantastic.
Concerning his solo stuff I only listened time ago in a friend's house one that I don't remember the title and it was inspired in African music. Didn't really catch my attention.
Anyway he is one of those musicians I have in the waiting list to get into his works. :)

OOOOOHHH MAN! That it was an amazing band in 1973 with lot of improvisation and great solos. Unfortunatelly there's not much live stuff from this tour oficcially released, probably because of legal troubles. So, collectors like me have to dig into bootlegs and audience recordings.

I see He's coming to Holland.

May 19/07 Den Haag, Holland World Forum Convention Center /JLP Band

Hm, I did some searching, and this gig has not been confirmed yet on the Convention Center website. Furthermore, it is not a one-off gig, but one of many during a festival. That means that tickets will be quite expensive. In this case

Found that too, I'll probably contact the festival organisation for confirmation if I succeed in getting over my festival allergy...

Jean Luc Ponty Individual Choice video A chance Meeting

 ·

Hi,

I know this a little late but someone mentions the video to JLP Individual Choice. I remember this as my 1st exposure to his music on Nighflight back in the 1980s. Its blew me away and the music was just mystical.

To make a long story short I met Jean Luc Ponty in person about 3 years ago in Bellevue,WA when he was promoting his daughters New Age album.

I volunteered to mix the sound system better because Border's didn't have the decency to pay a soundman(could you believe it!).

I was able to speak to him after the performance so I asked about the cool video for Individual Choice. He told me the guy or company that mads the video still owned the rights and was not being communicative regarding re-release!

A shame because I think even jazz/fusion fans would find the time lapse footage as artistic as JLP music. BTW he's a very humble musician with NO chip on his shoulder which leaves respecting him much higher than many other musicians I have crossed paths with.

I agree
In Belgium we used to have RTL tv playing videos all afternoon. Individual Choice was played a lot and I loved the video and the music. Has a really dreamy character to it and was certainly one of those defining moments for me.
Also, Alan Holdsworth is a musician I love and he played loads with Ponty.
