Individual Choice (1983)

I like this one very much because of its delicous blend of flavours - very much EM oriented.

Recorded in 1983 in Los Angeles, this is JLP's first recording where he plays all the violin, synthesizer and rhythm computer parts, except for one piece which was recorded with Allan Holdsworth (guitars) Randy Jackson (bass) and Rayford Griffin (drums). Both George Duke (synthesizer) and Allan Holdsworth contribute their solos to two other pieces. The title track was used for a revolutionary promotional video made of time lapse photography by Louis Schwartzberg.

Jean Luc Ponty was a member of The Mothers of Invention with Frank Zappa in ealy 70, around 73 beginning 74. He left the band in a non very friendly way. That is actually the best I know about his playing, I have some bootleg recordings from those tours and is really fantastic.
Concerning his solo stuff I only listened time ago in a friend's house one that I don't remember the title and it was inspired in African music. Didn't really catch my attention.
Anyway he is one of those musicians I have in the waiting list to get into his works. :)

I prefer his late '70s to mid-'80s stuff myself: Enigmatic Ocean, Civilized Evil, Cosmic Messenger, Mystical Adventures, Individual Choice are albums that come to mind. I stopped with Storytelling precisely because it was more worldmusic-centered--rhythm-based--and less synth-based.

I like Individual Choice (I remember there was a nice film clip from this album too), but haven't heard a lot of his other stuff.

Enigmatic Ocean is his best afaIc. Cosmic Messenger and Mystical Adventures are also very nice. Haven't really been following him since, actually. I did listen to some of his later stuff occasionally, but Mr. Ponty and I seem to have drifted apart 😉
