Now that “The Album” will see the light of day by end of the next month it would be nice to start another discussion which will be in line with other topics here on EMPortal. Recently Hurry Hurry started a discussion about labels that are not willing to accept their music and not so long ago one of our fellow members approached me for a very nice and attractive project.
Almost 3 years ago we started a thread entitled ‘Joint Efforts’. For some reason this title became special to me as it reflects exactly what we are doing here: working together. A nice and almost symbolic example will be The Album performed by “Joint Efforts”; 20 tracks in a row will become the physical evidence that people from all over the world are capable to do something together without really knowing eachother. The funny thing is that during the 3 year’s existance of this forum I have had the privilige to meet more and more people personally during concerts and festivals I visited whom until then I only used to know as virtual existing ‘speaking Avatars’. Believe it or not but the people behind the ‘avatars’ I have met so far matched the positive expectations I already had. This week I received a PM from one of them confirming this which strengthened the opinion that the connection in this community might be stronger than I always had thought.
From the start of the Album project I had in mind that if it would finally be possible to release this CD and if it would be able to ‘break even’ it would be a shame not to continue it. After some investigations I recently discovered a website which is actually based on a nice concept I was looking for: “It starts with fans first and then the artists create from there” Basically all we need is a dedicated group of people who are willing to ‘invest’ in the purchase of their ‘artist’s CD to make a physical release possible. The reason that I use the word physical is that I still believe in the wish and demand for the ‘classical’ CD or even better LP. The advantage is that you contribute nothing more than the amount you would spend to buy a CD and you assist the artist in keeping his/her hands free for full creativity.
As the potential of the “crowd” here is stronger than I initially thought I think it is a viable idea to gather a solid group of people here who might be interested to give it a go. Having studied the statistics of EMPortal from the start in 2007 I can tell you that the number of visits has been very positive (especially the last 12 months when the number of visits doubled) but more important there is a very active group here that visits the Portal on a daily basis, contributes in the discussions and are willing to assist us when we need help. If we could focus on this group you can simply conclude that the potential number of people who might be interested is large enough to make this concept work: appr. 100 people to invest money in a future CD of one of the fellow member artists. If there are more than enough people to support this idea we could even proof that it is possible to release a pressed CD below the psychological ‘limit’ of 10 Euro
I would be happy if it would be possible to gather people here who share the same opinion and who would like to participate in “Joint Efforts”
