Interestingly, recently I discussed with Bernd-Michael Land (Aliens Project), who started releasing electronic music in the late 70s, about the genre name "Berlin School". Bernie was of the opinion that it only was invented by music journalists in the 90s...
...but apparently, the term was coined right in this interview:
"When people put all the electronic music together that Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, myself, Manuel Göttsching and Ash Ra Tempel did, I think that it becomes clear that something developed over there that could be described as the 'Berlin School' of electronic music."
