Hi EmWorld !

If anyone can share their ideas or solutions regarding cataloguing, I'd be very grateful.

I've read through various blogs, but nothing appears to be very current, or successful. The probable solution is to drop each CD into the PC and just use Windows Media Player... but, I dread to think how long that would take. Then, there is the issue of the vinyl...

My thoughts are:

a) Barcode reader
b) Software interface
c) Spreadsheet

Kind Regards
Alan

Do you want just a listing, or do you want the music itself on your hard drive?

Thanks for the feedback so far.

To clarify, it's a listing that I'm interested in.

I'm using Music Collector by Collectorz, as mentioned by Audioot. Or actually, I bought a license and started entering my collection. But I only got at the 'B' so far.
It will work with a barcode scanner, but you can also search online by artist, album, etc. Entering your music isn't that hard, but it still takes time and discipline, which I'm lacking both at the moment. They have also apps for IOS and Android as well as an online service to access your collection, if you wish so.

I use discogs. Mainly started it for my 7"vinyl collection so I wouldn't buy the same thing again. Also use it for important ambient / electronic stuff. You can also rate your albums etc.

Excellent site, great for research and purchasing obscure stuff also. Create a user name/ account and start adding your collection . Easy.

I also use it on my iPhone when I am at record fairs/raiding record stores to check stuff.

I have my entire collection extracted as lossless (FLAC) files on some very large hard drives, with backup drives sitting in a safe deposit box (which I sync up every now and then).

Most discs are jewel boxes, so I dismantle them by removing the booklet and tray card, put the disc on a spindle and discard the box. I have a separate shelf for digi-pack titles which I keep of course.

My catalog is auto-generated into an .html file that I keep in my email inbox for quick reference when I'm out buying CDs. I've purchased my share of accidental duplicates.

When I began the initial extracting (in 2004) it took months. But my collection was a lot smaller back then. It would be an unimaginable task today. But I have the process mostly automated now and takes little time to keep up to date.

My next step is to store it all on a personal cloud drive so I can listen to all my music anywhere.
