You're German so I bet you remember when the whole "hippie/cosmic" culture crossed the pond from the U.S. to Germany (plus England, Japan, etc). That helped spur the popularity of "New Age" in undergound music communities. It (the music) began deep and with meaning and then by the 1980s was used more as a commercial selling point in a way.
Most of the big "EM" names in the late 1960s through the 1970s were very much into the New Age, it's symbolism and it's spiritual content. Most of the members of TD were hugely into it and still are. Ash Ra Tempel's name alone is 100% based on New Age mysticism and symbols.
New Age is not a bad word or thing though in the 1980s NA artists like Kitaro, TD, Yanni, Deuter, and countless other prog/cosmic groups went "soft". The music seemed to get watered down for an aging audience. Songs became shorter to try to fit into the new radio formats. The music became more easy listening and "adult contemporary".

I also like punk rock in part because there was usually a cause behind the music. Be it political or social issues. It added to the music (for me).

Nowadays there's "pop punk" bands like Greenday who sound similar to earlier punk but without the bite or balls of the earlier bands.
Make sense?

Now there's retro musicians trying to capture the magic of the late 1960s/1970s music be it punk or New Age or Synthpop, etc but it's not the same. I see so many "copiest" making lame attempts at creating what once was. Even now I've also seen it going on in Techno music and rap/hiphop. We just have to keep diggin deeper to find the Deep Music.
