Paid Download/Free Download

Hi Everyone! I don't know how many similarly minded producers there may be here, but I reckon that most all of us consume some kind of EM. I'm very keen to let people pay what they want or download my music for free (given that at the moment I'm primarily a student, my music is still developing etc..) but next year, maybe 2014, I'm likely to put out a full album.

So my question is, how would you like to get music while still benefiting the artist? Enigma's social song was a free download in exchange for posting to Facebook about it, I believe, so I was wondering if anyone had similar ideas or experiences, please share!

Thanks!
Alex

Using a site such as Bandcamp allows for the buyer to set the price, including $0 (free). In my opinion, that's the best option for a new artist to get their stuff out heard and out there, yet still offer the possibility to make some money from your endeavours.

I've seen many companies use the bribe technique for free stuff, which usually involves "liking" their page on Facebook, or something similar. But spamming others for a free track is the most awful idea ever.

Good luck with your music! :)

Thank you Mike, interesting to get someone else's perspective. I'm in agreement regarding Bandcamp, really like the name your price functionality. Do you make music yourself or did you come across it as a listener? I don't really know how well known Bandcamp is for buyers

Yeah, I've been writing/releasing for years, but give it away freely on my site and through various netlabels (click my signature if you're curious). While I don't personally use Bandcamp as a seller, I know many musicians who do, and it's only been positive comments.
I have used the site for purchasing music, and it's a breeze. Also, the fact that they sell lossless formats as standard practice (at no extra cost) gets huge bonus points from me.

Absolutely, I love the ease of use with Bandcamp - it's lovely to only need to upload a single file type and have it re-encoded on demand.

Thanks, I'll check out your music!

So nice to see several long-form pieces, I could never have the patience but the preview sounds like it develops really nicely (just downloading now so I can give it a proper listen) nice work!

This facebook fashion is becoming totally crazy. People sending you request to like them. People asking you to like the track BEFORE listening to it....
Anyways....

My opinion is that selling music online is quite hard unless you are supported by a solid network and/or label.
What I'm currently setting up is an e-mail collecting system wich delivers the requested tracks to a provided e-mail. It seem to work and will hopefully help to build a database.
