Playing the CS-80 (-50, -60)...

Hi all.
I am lucky enough to have a CS-60. However a beautiful instrument this is, it always sounds like Vangelis :?
Maybe it's the soul of the instrument or maybe it's a subconsious wish of mine. But even if I change the sound completely, I end up playing a Vangelis sound.

There seem to be more people than me who have fallen in the same trap: Emmens (Vintage Contemporaries), Syn (The Glass Bridge).

But there are still a lot of CS-80 (etc) users that managed to make a sound of their own; McCartney (London Town), Schulze (Live), ELO (Discovery), Jarre (Equinox), Wonder, Lundin (Tales) etc.

So it obvioulsy can be done. Any comments from y'all?

I am lucky enough to have a CS-50. However a beautiful instrument this is, it always sounds like a Yamaha CS synthesizer. I don't agree that you automatically sound like Vangelis. That ring-modulator sounds so particular and can't be found on any other synth.

On my next album I used the CS50 a lot but I don't have the feeling to copy or sound like Vangelis.

The non memorized parameters of the CS 80 are the place where the rather normal synth goes into something very special. The ringmodulator with its special low frequency reduction, the static output filter with its nice sounding resonance, the lower and high end volume balance, ...
These settings are great. I would love to see those parameters on a modern synth. And then add the other features like polyphonic after touch and the ribbon bender.

I got a patch on my Q that is doing the polyphonic sound and then route it through the sub-out to the external in. And the external in sound is monophonic adding a sine wave to the ringmodulator. The second input og the ring mod is the polyphonic part.
It gets the special CS 80 like ring mod sound. But the bass is way to strong. So I use the mixer's filters to reduce it.
Because both sounds are played from the same keyboard, the envelope of the ringmodulator is triggered the right way.
But all this is only just one component of the CS80 sound we all love.

And I have to confess, that I am playing way more Vaneglis like when using this sound then any other time.

I bought my CS80 just because I *wanted* to have that Vangelis-type of sound. No other electronic instrument has ever been associated that strongly with one single player. That
