Software Step Sequencer

Hello

I'm looking for a software step sequencer to control my hardware synths.
You know, like the moog 960 or doepfer MAQ but in software, and simple.
I've tried MPG64 (uses tons of cpu and can't switch off it's 'piano' sound)
and SoftStep (too complex) but do you know any others out there please.

Prefer ...
- easy to use
- can output midi to external synths
- can output midi to soft synths (less important)
- has own 'sound' for setting up that can be switched off
- freeware or shareware

thanks

I thought Fruity Loops had a step sequencer, but not sure if you cantrol external stuff with it.
