Terje's music was my introduction to the ECM label many years ago, and to jazz music in general. His music exists very much on the periphery of jazz though, and I think he more than anyone else established the typical distant, atmospheric sound that ECM became famous for. As such, a lot of his work could just as easily be discussed in the "ambient" section.

I'm suprised his music hasn't been discussed more at these forums. He is definitely one of the most unique guitarists in the world, and has often incorporated electronics into his music with wonderful results.

Recommendations:

Odyssey, Waves, Descendre, Eos (with David Darling) and the first self-titled Rypdal/Vitous/DeJohnette album.

These should appeal to anyone who has a taste for atmospheric, melancholic music. Sublimely beautiful stuff. All those mentioned feature electronic instruments (though usually this just consists of organ, electronic strings or guitar synthesizer).

For the more adventurous, his orchestral works are also worth checking out.

Eos is brilliant, but I like David darling's solo effort Dark Wood better, because it is so much moodier. Just listen to the more quiet pieces on Eos, and multiply the atmosphere by 10... Descendre is great too, with Palle Mikkelborg on trumpet. Hmmm...

My all time Terje Rypdal favourite however is Blue. Stunning avant-jazzscapes...
Chaser is very nice too. His later stuff (the orchestral works included) never stuck to me like the earlier and mid-eighties stuff. I felt that his music simply became too irratic for my taste, but it has been a long time since I listened to them. I should probably give them another go sometime, because my taste in music has grown significantly since then...

Terje's Ambient Album.....

Ok. Nice to see some die hard Terje Rypdal fans here including me a synth musician.

Now all of you know Terje's an amazingly versitile guitar player and composer who can shred when he feels its necessary but has anyone ever listened to his 1976 release "After the Rain"?

It was my first exposure to his music back in the 1980's because a) I like aestethics of the album cover which is a solemn green hill against the blue sky b) it was in the cut-out bin so I could actually afford to purchase the LP and c) it had Rhodes and ARP string ensemble on it.

Its a quiet excursion by Terje. There no drums or heavy bombastic moments and its filled with lucid reflective and melodic tone poetry.
He plays a few instruments you will never hear him play such as the nylon string acoustic guitar(he never plays acoustic period), flute and the ARP string ensemble. His wife joins in on wordless vocals on a few pieces.

This is a beautiful album and it is only available on cd from ECM Germany and its well worth attaining.

Well my $.02 worth on Terje. I also like the material with David Darling EOS and the albums with Miroslav Vitous!
