I normalise to 0db and that's it. The only thing I compress is the drum kit to get a punchier sound. So my CD's are probably quieter than those with dynamic range compression but if that means it don't stand out so be it. I'd rather have the dynamic range.

Normalizing to zero dB is absolutely okay, maybe applying some Waves L2 to it if it

Waves L2/L3 is a very expensive plugin.
