Have prepared the next episode of Sonolab and tonight's show has a space / planetary theme as its 'leitmotif'

The show is on every Sunday evening from 19:00 hrs to 20:00 hrs and tonight will feature music by:

Isao Tomita, Modulator ESP, Cosmic Hoffmann, Schiller, Wavestar, Lustmord, Vangelis, Tetsu Inoue and Hugh Banton.

The Modulator ESP track comes from the great Joint Efforts album by the way.

Click on "Live stream" in the left column or for a week after broadcast the whole show is available as an On Demand Stream from the website of our radiostation. Where can you find that? Well, here of course:

http://www.omroepalmelo.nl/sonolab/

and then click "Luister naar uitzending gemist" in the middle of the screen. A second window will open up (might be that you have to accept that through your pop-up killer) and the show starts (with a bit of that evenings 19:00 hours news first).

Check in if you have the time and let me know what you think of the show.

Full playlist (artist - track - albumtitle):

Isao Tomita - Mars (introduction: countdown + launch) - The Planets
Modulator ESP - Black Sun - Joint Efforts
Cosmic Hoffmann - Megasun - Outerspace Gems
Schiller - Polarstern - Lichtblick (dvd - section: Heimathafen)
Wavestar - Moonwind - Moonwind
Lustmord - Black Star (short excerpt) - ??
Vangelis - Pulstar - Albedo 0.39
Murcof - Cosmos (short except) - Cosmos
Cosmic Hoffmann - Magellanic Cloud - Outerspace Gems
Tetsu Inoue - Mini Moon - Inland
Hugh Banton - The Planets : Neptune (Gustav Holst) - The Planets

FYI, that last one isn't electronic but played in state-of-the art digital organs build by Hugh Banton themselves and recorded in his studio The Organ Workshop.

A beautiful mélange again. Thanks!

Especially the last track by Hugh Banton, whom I did not know until today intrigued me. Meanwhile I have bought his album 'the Planets'

Thanks for the compliment. This is exactly the reason why I do these 'theme' kind of shows because it forces me to go into my collection quite deeply. The 'problem' is finding interesting new themes.

Hugh Banton's recording of The Planets really did take my by surprise as well. A friend of mine is a big Van Der Graaf Generator fan and he recently mentioned this cd to me and since I really like Holst's original composition I was intrigued wether this would translate well to organ.
And it sure did... but with the one caveat that there isn't really a organ in the world on which you could play it in the way Banton has recorded it. He has taken the liberty to overdub various parts to give them a bigger sound (strings especially). And of course it is all performed on digital organs which he builds himself.

the 'theme' approach works very well especially when you start to use small fragments to emphasize certain aspects. Talking about Themes the Banton track triggered my interest and I found out that he used to play with Van der Graaf Generator. The funny part here is that I have never heard any of their material so I went to Spotify and picked out Pawn Hearts. 1971, unbelievable that I 'overlooked' this record. Their music is totally mind blowing, interesting from the beginning till the end including Theme One (original version) which I know but from Cozy Powell's 'Over the Top album' (1979) but apparently this track was added to the 2005 reissue. Another part that was added is 'Diminutions' composed and played by the same Hugh Banton (Hammond and Farfisa organs, piano, mellotron, ARP synthesizer, bass pedals, bass guitar, vocals)

Quite a discovery on a cold Sunday evening in 2010, 39 years after its original release Wink
