I think it is a Taiko, although most models have a double ring of nails on each end to keep the skin tight.
This one looks very "homemade" or at least pretty old. Must have a terrific sound anyway...

That is quite possible - it actually belonged to a former girlfriend of mine originally, and I always assumed it was African. You could very well be right though - it does have a drum head on either side (producing subtly different pitches), and the ring does suggest it is designed to be hung up.
Is the dark patch in the centre painted or something on top of the skin Steve?

Thanks for the info guys - the dark patch in the centre is painted on (on both sides). This particular drum is about 40 cms high (standing as it is in the picture) and about 35 cms wide at the widest point.
It does sound very nice

Nice stuff.
My djembes, congas, cajones and assorted asian drums are now occupying two rooms in my house........ wife is going bonkers
My favourite is probably the Remo asonga, which is now unavailable, a bit like an Ngomo drum. The tone and sound from it is astounding.
My other favourite thing is a highly delicate, but beautiful sounding african balafon
You should hear this thing, utterly beautiful hand made instrument.
I am going to have to stop buying drums and percussion........... maybe.
