Yah, big WR fan here, too. Sweetnighter gets the most plays with "Boogie Woogie Waltz" my favorite, but I like most everything between that release and Mr. Gone, after that they just kind went stale (at least at the time). That said, I love Heavy Weather and the two tunes mentioned previously, but I love the heavy bass/brass synth hit on "Palladium" right around the 2:35 mark. I have since gone back and listened to those post Mr.G releases and they are better than I thought. Zawinul's solo works aren't bad, either.

Another fusion-y band from around that same time that i have just discovered is Secret Oyster. The most noticeable difference between WR & SO regarding instrumentation is that SO has some pretty blistering lead guitar work and lacks the "ethnic percussion", whereas most WR had no guitar other than bass. Check 'em out!

For me, Weather Report is Jaco Pastorius.
His bass play is one and only.
So I love the Jaco years, especially "Night Passage".

Hey,

Nice to see electronic musician appreciate WR.

Now was a band who had zero issues using the technology of the time to expand its sound palette not to mention some of the tightest performing jazz musicians around.

Zawinul was the man. His work on Heavy Weather and Mysterious Traveller was impeccable and ahead of anyone else in that genre making that style of music.

I agree with Juta there will never be another Jaco. He left this planet early in life but left a musical legacy on the fretless bass that has yet to this day to be equalled both in tone and in approach to the instrument. I do think Skulli Sverrison is a close!

I think its time to dig these discs out again a give them some serious listening.
