So many times I see on this forum words like "I want real gear - not software"" or "we use hardware" come out as if computers are somehow a lesser life form.

What is this thing against computers and using them to make music?

Peter, im not a musician, but i have a good ear. IMO, software, real gear, to me it doesnt matter, if its good music, why should it matter? some people are just plainly anal retentive on certain things, consider this one of them. Steve Humphries of Create used or uses software synths, and he did a fabulous job especially his first cd which i was hooked on composed if im not mistaken all on software synths, he did a phenomenal job and holds up well to some of the better EM cds out there composed with real gear.

Some people, usually those who actually have a lot of hardware, have a thing against software. Some don't as well.

Me, I use whatever I have to get the sound I like, I don't care if it's a comb and paper, if it sounds right, I'll use it.

I personally prefer hardware as I like a nice tactile interface with dedicated controls/processor/convertors/outputs that are optimised for the job.

Also I find hardware is much less likely to crash at an inopportune moment.

Having said that I listen to music, not equipment lists, so in the end if it's good music and it sounds good then I don't care either way.

As a musician...hardware...cos that's all I've got

As an end user...couldn't give a ****...results results results.

A poor idea on hardware is still a poor idea. You wear a hairsuit all day, but it won't make the music good. The future of music will always lay in kids hands, therefore software is the only option.

software is better? it is easier, no cables, cheaper (some is even free), faster results, space saving, less power consuming, you do not have to go to the shop (download it at home) if your computer does not crash it never get broken, pff I must be mad I like hardware more!

o, and I must say some sounds real good.
