What triggers a sale?

Hey,

Inspired by the recent column, I started this thread in order to discuss marketing and sales techniques among independent artists and labels.

What I'd like to discuss with you all is, how we can sell more, be it CDs or downloads or event tickets. What are your ideas for strategies and sales-triggering steps? How can we think outside the box and use new technologies, new customer behaviour and new challenges? Which of the old methods still work?

For example, a small label can:

* Give customers bonus stuff, like merchandise, extra CD, autograph, etc
* Create high quality booklets and CDs filled to the rim (value for money)
* Bonus point systems; buy x products and get a freebie
* Release free samples (on the website, MySpace, p2p networks, etc)
* Stage concerts (if that is possible)
* Establish interactivity and connection with fans/customers
* Reach media, live venues and fans cheaply and quickly via email
* Get our music onto samplers and compilations
* Maintain high frequency and quality of information

Anything else?

Do you think any of this will work? What are customers interested in? How can we improve the value of our products? Does social network communities really advance sales? Does radio still matter?

And what triggers a sale for us small independent guys?

* The music itself
* Value for money
* Packaging, website or appearance
* Reputation or name
* Customer service and connectivity
* Hype, PR saturation and community buzz
* Availability and visibility in shops
* Concerts, shows, trade fairs, conventions

Anything else?

Discuss! :-)

How much do you think fan/buyer interaction counts?

For example, if fans are allowed to participate in the creative process. Or join live chats with the artist. Or interact in social network communities. Or receive personalized products (ex. signed CDs).

Will that create a tighter bond and maybe result in a higher desire to buy something?

Advertising is all that matters.
then there's more income, then there's more advertising...
and then there's the Live shows...

But!!!
people still have their brains washed by commercialism.

Not much to do in that field...

...not much???

I think we're all a little different, so there is no one answer, Every purchase for me is part of a journey, something will have led me from one disc to another.

Personally I use Amazon a lot. I read the reviews from customers on there. However, I don't take the comments too seriously. That is, I'd never let a review put me off - unless it has some factoid that is important (such as, I think I'm buying an instrumental record, and it's got vocals on every track).

I often look for a sample. The best place for that is Youtube, which generally has a decent track/clip. 30 second clips of electronic music is worthless.

Cost is always an issue, within reason. $10 or less and it's okay. $10-$15 will wait a bit until there's nothing in the lower category I want. $15-$20 I'm expecting something special packaging wise. If it's something I want, and it's available for $10 standard, and $20 in a special edition, I'll go with the more expensive option (just did this with the new Schulze and Bowie albums).

The discs need to be readily available. So you need to be in Amazon really, or Discogs at least. Ebay is good for buying stuff, but I don't use it to find new discs.

Of the list mentioned in the first post:

Care should always be taken with costs. Merchandise and freebies cost money, and eat into profits. People tend to forget that the T-Shirt, hat, or trinket is costing someone money. Personally I;m not bothered about such things, unless they're an intrinsic part of the package. So for example, Kiss included a cardboard "Love Gun" in one of their CD's - it's useless and childish, and just - well - ESSENTIAL really. Same with the sticker they put in Rock N Roll Over. It came with the album as a freebie, rather than being given away here and there. I like that.

If you're going to do a CD - do it properly. Give me a booklet with something written on it. I like to know all the details, when are where recorded, inspirations, etc. Cover art matters. I've got plenty of rotten covers, but good cover art can make a difference.

Bonus point systems and interactivity is of no interest to me. I guess interactivity means Facebook - and I don't even have an account there. Web sites are good, but they have to be updated regularly. A web site that doesn't update more than once a week is dead, basically.

Of course the music counts for everything, really. But if I don't know who you are, and what you do, then you've got to give me a reason to buy. So give me info and a Youtube link (figuratively, you understand). Who else do you sound like (it's not use saying you're just like another obscure act, either - that's the blind leading the blind). Just give me some idea of what's going on.

It isn't the best site, but I regularly check out the web site of SUB ROSA. I often end up ore-ordering stuff from them just from viewing it on their site with the samples. So there model works for me.

And probably a lot more stuff........
