thought i would pose a question to the musician members of this forum, since there doesn't seem to be much discussion on this forum at all, except en-masse advertisements!

[edited here - so folk replying don't waffle, and just stick to the point]

my question is -

when you record stuff ie: tracks, or an album. do you ever think there is stuff you just like to record as sketches or ideas, but never intend to release what you record at all, or just record stuff and intend to release it as an album or EP anyway.
often the case is, i will record parts of a track, but keep them aside, thinking i could maybe use those 'track stems' in some other way or some other track, or just keep them around to fuel more ideas i have and elaborate on them.

sometimes i like to record just personal stuff, and never intend to release it at all.

however, i will only release music if i feel it's right to do so... but from time to time i get emails asking when the next release is!

Well, probably I just inspired You to ask this question, so let's see how I would answer it...

Well... No.

I agree. So, nice that You start one (discussion)...

it's mostly hey mom! i have released an album, followed by days of posting endless reviews that no one probably reads followed by me me me syndrome.

Speaking only for myself (who else):

Of course I post about an album I've released - few others would do that for me, I fear...

However, I also post about music by musicians I adore - as can be seen by many posts in this here forum (but much more on FB, actually). Some of these are famous anyway and probably don't need my little bit of praise; others are fellow artists of minor popularity. It's always hard to perceive oneself without distortion, but still it seems to me, that that "me me me" shoe doesn't quite fit me (just saying...).

Then, I also often strove to participate in all manners of discussions - in this forum and elsewhere - in the hope to add some meaningful, interesting or entertaining thought or other.
On such occasion, I observed that some fellow members apparently deemed themselves to noble to answer any of my different utterances directly, usually keeping the conversation just among themselves, largely ignoring (or on other occasions apparently deliberatedly misinterpreting) my input, and generally giving me a feeling of nonexistence, or better-not-exsitence (at least at this particular place).
While it's OK for me if someone does not enjoy to communicate with me, I still like to point out that such treatment does little to inspire me to take part in the general discussion...

and is this the right section of the forum to post this?

Good question... 😉

Yes. (Lots of it, actually...)

It would depend on how those sketches develop...

Just a quick question: is this still a question (or part of one)?

Anyway - it makes sense...

This seems to be a wise and tactful way to conduct Your musical affairs. Congratulations! 👍

I wish I was up to behave always that disciplined (and in fact, in the cases of many projects which still grow over years in the backyard of my hard discs, I even manage to...).

Still, I get these WILD, UNCONTROLABLE impulses from time to time - usually when I had really fun recording something that came about spontaneously and I like the result - to immediately share that with people who might appreciate it (...I think of my admittedly small circle of listeners) as long as the excitement of the experience still lingers.

But that doesn't mean (oh, not at all!) that I just would share anything I record. That's simply not the case...

Of course, IF I do such a thing, I'm aware of the shortcomings of a recording that's in every way unpolished - usually I think of marking such a thing correctly (so I don't promise any "polished" experience where there is none) and also, I don't ask any money for it.

In today's case, by the way, the only reason for it to share the thingy via Bandcamp was that there's not enough space left on my SoundCloude account (which might be seen as a more suitable place to publish improvisations or sketches...).

Oh, and in fact: this recording is a continuation of a topic I posted about - only on FB, I admit - and for those who care to follow my posts, it might make actually some sense.

Well, this much discussion for the moment, I hope my degree of engagement was satisfying... 😉

short answer is no, the longer one is a little more complex.

I have music recorded using sounds from various sources which are for my exploration and enjoyment, but not for general release - for example, I was asked at short notice to create an evolving, continuous soundscape lasting for up to 3 days for a festival space....
....however the general chaos in the event I had been asked to participate in that led to the very short notice also led to it's complete cancellation so I still have all the basic soundscape parts that I may use one day.

In the end I have to feel happy with what I have done before I put it out there - rather than creating a sort of diary based release approach, though that can have its positives too. I am reminded of TGs 24 hours box sets where you could have the latest 24 hours of music, irrespective of quality and incidents during the live performances.

I often find a sound that arises by chance while exploring for one track that may inspire or trigger off more music in a different direction. One sound that ended one album became the sound that started the next.

At the same time I often include a couple of mixes in the Bandcamp releases so that there is the 'finished' piece and an earlier 'basic' version. This started when I had completed an album and was uncertain which version I preferred myself and decided to put them both out.
The earlier version was more minimal and 'static' whereas the final version was more 'active' and they both took my imagination to different places.

I also like to put out both long form and separate track versions of the music as I find the gap produced between tracks by some players extremely irritating

I need to get back into recording more regularly so I actually have a choice to make on the subject. Sometimes life just takes over.

All the time.

I release only a fraction of what I record. Why don't I release it? Easy. It's not worth releasing in most of the cases as it's just a sketch book entry, an idea but no finished piece of music.

Sometimes I record stuff for a possible release, just to find out that it has been superceded by better tracks while working on an album.

I only release what I deem worthy of a release -- the pickier I become, the longer it takes me to finish an album.

I can't help the impression that many people believe making music to be something you do en passant, it's like going to the toilet or whatever, it just so happens and oops, there's a new Album coming out.

If you are serious about what you are doing, it is not quite like this. If you're not... well.

I release 95% or more of what I record, but my recording processes often take a very long time. That's not to say the beginnings are sketches, or trials, but that some tracks need time to find out what they are. Some of my pieces with Mooch for instance took years to finish.
In the overwhelming majority of cases of my albums there is a concept or template that I'm working to, which includes track quantities, lengths etc. In almost every case the title comes first or at the beginning. I find that method allows me to focus better.

I record 60% of my music....I release 75% of my recordings, so a lot is lost....
Making sketches and keeping them for a later moment is not my system.
My music is a recording of how I feel at that moment, and how I translate that into a musical form. Keep recordings and glue them together is just not my thing.

Why keeping when the music is just crap and trying things... and not made for release ;)

Besides that I think fans can choose by themselves when something is good, and buy that.

well it's all good seeing how you other folks work and what kind of system you use or put into practice.

which will probably bring me to another question later on in another thread regarding do you listen to your own music except for recording and mixing it! or are you done with it once it's out there and never listen to it again!
