The role of the DJ has been fundamental in this genre and they've even been influential in inspiring genres themselves.

Give your 10 essential (excuse the Tong) mix/compilation albums? :)
Commercial release mixes only no radio or obscure bootlegs!

Global Underground San Fransisco - Sasha - Prog trance didn't get better than this.
World Service - Dave Clarke - Tight techno excellence.
Excess Luggage - Laurent Garnier - The showcase of Laurent's diverse styles and masterful mixing.
Logical Progression - LTJ Bukham - The first and still the best Good Lookin' progressive/ambient Drum 'n Bass compilation.
70 Minutes of Madness - Coldcut - 35 tracks in 70 mins!!!!
Textures - Darren Emerson/Alex Paterson - The best of the classic Trace Europe Express albums mixed by The Orb.
Innovation in the Dynamics of Acid - Universal Indicator - Dirty AFX acid techno.
Mixmag Live 9 - AlexPaterson/Mixmaster Morris - Morris' mix is a perfect example of post dance ambient.
Liquid Room Tokyo - Jeff Mils - The man from Detroit keeping it dark and deadly the way he does best.
DE9 Transitions - Richie Hawtin - The other man from Detroit innovating digital mixing and pushing the boundary's.

Any of John '00' Fleming's White Label mixes - these are ESSENTIAL.

Most of the Global Underground mixes, Sasha, John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Dave Seaman.

Anything by Sasha and Digweed.

I don't have many of these CDs, but as far as more recent stuff goes, Richie Hawtin's DE9 mixes would have to be right up there.

Anything by 2 Many DJs or Soundhog.

Both put together some really eclectic mixes and don't just rely on dance music to keep the beat going.
